Why We Need to Grab the Mic

Having worked on rap music for four years, I think it’s time I write a post for AA Limelight on why Asian American involvement in rap could have SO MUCH potential for our community. I mean, one of our biggest problems is the model minority myth. For some progressive Asian Americans, hearing the term can get pretty repetitive. It’s in most of our Ethnic Studies classes in college and it seems to be the topic of every other workshop in community organizations and university conferences. But somehow, many in the Asian American community have never heard of the term before, nor do they understand it’s a myth.
